HYUNDAI Department Store’s Duty-Free Shop to Reduce Disposable Shopping Bags

Launched the industry’s first ‘Re.green Pick-Up’ campaign where customers choose whether or not to receive disposable shopping bags

To reduce single-use packaging waste, Hyundai Department Store Duty Free is implementing a customer-participation campaign in which customers choose whether or not to use disposable shopping bags when purchasing duty free products.

Hyundai Department Store Duty Free announced on the 11th that it is implementing the ‘Re.Green Pick-Up' campaign, in which customers choose whether or not to receive a disposable shopping bag when purchasing duty free products at Hyundai Department Store Internet Duty Free, an online mall. After pilot operation in September 2022, it began full-scale implementation by reflecting customer opinions and points of improvement.

The 'Re.Green Pick-Up' campaign was implemented to reduce single-use packaging waste that occurs when receiving duty-free products at the pick-up area at the airport. If a customer selects ‘Do not use disposable shopping bags’ at the Hyundai Department Store Internet Duty Free Shop payment stage, the Hyundai Department Store Duty Free Shop delivers the duty-free items that are not in shopping bags to the customer at the airport pick-up area.

What is noteworthy is that the number of customers participating in the campaign has been steadily increasing since the pilot operation in September of last year. The customer participation rate, which was only in the single digits in the first month of implementation, exceeded 40% in three months. Hyundai Department Store Duty Free explained that it expects to reduce about 45 tons of disposable shopping bag waste annually if overseas travel normalizes with a high customer participation rate.
